The acknowledged leaders in the field of sparkling wines are those produced in the Champagne district of France. Whatever the magical factor is, the climate, the soil or just France itself, the wines of Champagne have flavors and nuances that are achieved nowhere else in the world. Even the French Champagne houses who have established facilities in our country produce excellent wines, but in the vernacular of Brooklyn “they ain’t Champagne.†Champagne has its own specific qualities and these qualities are not obtainable anywhere but France.
In our opinion, of all the Champagne houses currently represented in the United States, one of the finest is the age old house of Pommery. Pommery is a company that was born in the 19th century and was nurtured to its present position by Louise Pommery, a woman of drive and foresight who was a century ahead of her time. Her vision and demand for quality has continued, throughout the years, and has helped propel Pommery to its present position in the marketplace.
The Champagne of Pommery has continually garnered the praise of royalty and critics alike. As with all wines, Champagne begins its life in the vineyard. Pommery chooses its grapes from vineyards that have been producing grapes for centuries which are located in the sections of the Champagne district that has consistently produced exceptional grapes and conforms to the strict requirements of the Pommery wine makers.
Pommery Brut Royal ($39.99). Brute Royal is the backbone of Pommery and deserves to be. It is a fresh, bright and extremely enjoyable champagne that carries an easily identifiable yeast and bread aroma with hints of citrus. The flavor displays a cherry element which is both very noticeable and very enjoyable. What impressed us about this wine is the finish. The wine finishes in ways similar to most Champagne, toasty and bread-like with hints of fruits. This finish flavor seem to last indefinitely and is among the most enjoyable finish flavors that we have ever experienced. One sip of this wine and you will understand exactly why it has become so popular.
Champagne Pommery Brut Rose ($54.99). Only two grape varieties, pinot noir, and chardonnay
are used to make up this elegant salmon colored beauty. The wine posses a fresh berry flavor,
which is nestled in a cradle of yeast and bread, flavors. The bubbles, always a sign of a great
Champagne, are small and seem to last indefinitely. The Champagne Pommery Brut Rose is one
of our favorite rose champagnes and has always been a source of great pleasure every time we
have sampled
Pommery Pop ($12.99.00/187ml). Pommery Pop Rose ($15.99.00/187ml). It was a sight to behold. Three elegantly dressed people, one of them of French royalty, dining at one of the finest restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, all r drinking through a straw. Pommery Pop No, it wasn’t a drunken orgy, nor was it a group of people giving way to wild abandon. It was a quiet, dignified dinner (after all there was royalty present) that just happened to end with an unusual, but very understandable, twist. We were privileged to be dining with, Prince Alain de Polignac who at that time was also associated with Pommery Champagne. Prince Alain put his association with Pommery very simply; “I am a chemical engineer and the chief oenologist at Pommery and I also happen to be a Prince.” We were to be the first in the United States to sample a new invocation from Pommery called Pop Champagne Pommery, in an attempt to take the snobbery out of the wine, has introduced this new wine in a new bottle with a new name. Called Pop, (product of Pommery), it is a wine directed at the new generation of wine drinkers. This is neither a sweet wine nor a fruit flavored wine. It is a fine, well-made, true French champagne of exceptional quality and is made with all of the love and care that goes into all of the Pommery wines.
